Lakeview Marathon announces a flatter lakeside route and a new 5km family run

Organisers expect 12,000 runners in December. The new course avoids two steep flyovers, and a family run allows strollers and wheelchairs.

The Lakeview Marathon will follow a new, flatter route around the lake this December, and will add a five-kilometre family run open to strollers and wheelchair users, organisers said on Monday.

The old route crossed two steep flyovers that runners often described as the hardest part of the race. The new course loops twice around the lake promenade and through the university campus, with only gentle slopes.

"We want first-timers to finish smiling and fast runners to chase personal bests," said race director Anita Fernandes. "A flatter course helps both."

Water stations will be placed every 2.5 kilometres, with medical posts at every fifth station. The organisers have promised to use refillable cups at most stations to cut plastic waste.

Roads around the lake will be closed from 4 am to 11 am on race day. City buses will run on diverted routes, and residents will receive a map of closures a week in advance.

Registration opens next Monday. The organisers said ten per cent of entries in each category would be reserved for women runners from the city's running clubs.
