Kavita Pal, a 15-year-old class 10 student from Bhaironpur, broke the Kesarganj district record for the girls' 400 metres on Thursday, running 56.8 seconds at the district athletics meet. The old record of 57.2 seconds had stood for 22 years.

Pal trains on a mud track behind her school, which her coach marks with lime powder before each session. This was her first meet on a synthetic track.
