The district cricket stadium in Kesarganj has installed LED floodlights on its four towers, allowing evening matches for the first time and cutting lighting power use by about 60 per cent compared with the old halogen lamps, the district sports office said.
The lights were tested on Tuesday night with a practice match between two local clubs. Players said the light was even across the ground and that high catches were easier to judge than under the old lamps.
"Under the old lights, there were dark patches near the boundary," said club captain Ankit Saxena. "Tonight, you could see the seam on the ball from the deep."
What changes
- Evening matches for the City Premier T20 and district leagues.
- Local clubs can book the ground for night games at a fixed hourly rate.
- Lights can be dimmed for practice sessions, saving power.
- Glare shields on the towers to reduce light spilling into nearby homes.
Residents of the colony next to the stadium had complained about glare during earlier trials. Officials said shields had been fitted and that lights would be switched off by 11 pm.
The sports office plans to use the savings on electricity to fund coaching camps for under-14 players during the winter holidays.
