Two in three gig workers in five large cities have no emergency savings, and most could cover less than two weeks of expenses if they lost work suddenly, according to a survey by the Urban Work Institute, an independent research group.

The researchers spoke to 2,500 delivery riders, ride-hailing drivers and home-service workers. Many said they paid for vehicle repairs, phone bills and fuel from their own earnings, which made it hard to save.
